The Webb Residence Art Studio and A.D.U. project consists of the creation of an Accessory Dwelling Unit in the rear/western portion of the property that relates architecturally to the existing historic Eichler Home. The 240 GSF A.D.U. has been designed to relate to the exact method of construction and the articulation of the detailing of the existing 2,709 GSF, one-story, single-family residence. The A.D.U. will initially be used as an artist’s studio for the Owner and transition to an actual A.D.U. at some point in the future.
The A.D.U. was conceived as a mid-century modern object placed with the context of the existing rear yard.
The design consists of two Concrete Masonry Unit walls on the north and west sides of the house marking the solidity of the A.D.U. whereas the south and east sides of the house are constructed with the same window wall system of the existing house marking the transparency required of an artist’s studio. Exposed, heavy timber, wood beams mark the five “bays” of the window wall system. The interior bathroom, painted a bright orange accent color which is a traditional color for Eichler homes, reads as a solid, colorful “box” within a simple masonry and glass “box”. The A.D.U. is sited to take advantage of the southern solar exposure with a large roof overhang reminiscent of the existing house to protect the high summer sun while allowing in the low winter sun while facing the existing swimming pool.
