CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH 15TH STREET RESTROOM FACILITY

EXISTING 15TH STREET RESROOM LOOKING DUE SOUTH TOWARDS THE PACIFIC OCEAN

The City of Newport Beach 15th Street Restroom Facility is a re-imagining of a utilitarian facility into a beautiful, thoughtfully built intrusion into the sandy beach along the majestic Pacific Ccean.

The Design Concept for the project is based on the notion that the beach and the ocean are entirely about the constant movement and ephemeral nature of the shoreline.  The wind blows the sand into multiple shapes, the water carves the sand in others.  The waves crash endlessly onto the beach, constantly changing the manner in which the sea engages with the land.

The Design Concept draws on three specific, unique ideas in order to give the project a thoughtful starting point from which to design the rather utilitarian building:

PELICANS IN FLIGHT Locked into their group formation, the Pelicans glide merely inches above the surface of the ocean, landing on rocks and shore at will.

THE SEA MEETS THE SHORE The sea with it’s constantly changing effects on the shoreline of the Californina coast.

THE SEA AS IT MEETS AND ERODES THE SAND – The sea as it erodes the solidity of the sand dunes into ever-changing shapes and forms.
