The Bruyn Residence project consists of the remodeling of a nearly 100-year-old Carriage House and subsequent additions into a cohesive Secondary Residence for an existing Single-Family Residence. Located near the Foothills of Eaton Canyon in a historic neighborhood of Pasadena, the new residence will serve as a rental unit for the Owner of the primary residence and create a small residential complex.
605 GROSS SQUARE FEET
ONE BEDROOM, ONE BATHROOM
The overall design idea is to have the Carriage House draw its architectural vocabulary from the design style, massing and exterior building materials of the Primary House, while articulating an independent architectural voice for the Carriage House itself. Horizontal wood siding and heavy timber outriggers are the primary exterior building materials while landscaped wood trellis elements articulate the east and south sides of the building, breaking up the mass of the plain exterior walls. The one-bedroom, one-bath residence has a completely new gourmet kitchen and ample living space. Two small yards are located on the west side at the Master Bedroom and the east side at the Living Room and Kitchen. New wood casement windows are located to provide as much natural light into the interior spaces as possible. A front porch element has been designed to specifically replicate the front porch of the Primary House.
