The Bennett Residence is a project located in the “Forever Fullerton” tract of homes which is an Eichler-Esque development from the mid-1960’s.
“FOREVER FULLERTON” – Quintessentially Midcentury Modern, these homes featured plenty of floor-to-ceiling windows to bring the outside in, soaring ceilings and post-and-beam construction. Carports created space for Americans’ growing appetites for motorized vehicles. Color-coordinated “dream kitchens” with convenient built-in features were marketed to the era’s busy housewives. Over the years, many of these homes have fallen into disrepair, but a handful of Mid-century Modern enthusiasts including real estate experts, contractors and builders are tracking down these forgotten homes and trying to bring back the shine they had when they were built.
This project consists of the addition of a 706 GSF Master Bedroom, Master Bathroom and Office. The Master Bedroom is conceived as a volumetric space, sloping gradually upwards toward the northwest side of the property, creating a window wall along the northwest side of the addition where a Breezeway has been introduced. The Master Bathroom is tucked behind the Master Bedroom offering privacy and the Office serves as the terminus of the Breezeway and is open to the expanse of the yard.
The window wall is shaded by a steel and wood “eyebrow element which casts shade along the wall while creating a strong horizontal datum which contrasts with the verticality of the Master Bedroom space. The interior spaces are conceived as small objects placed in a large volumetric space – the insertion of a wood bed wall at the Master Bedroom and two glass objects of the shower and toilet room within the Master Bathroom. The Mid-Century Modern language is continued throughout the interior of the home in the fixtures, lighting and interior floor and wall materials, all of which are washed in natural light emanating from the windows wall and the clerestory windows above.
