The Edwards Residence is located in Brentwood, California. The sketches shown are studies done for the owners to show how the transformation of their rather traditional home into a Japanese-inspired home would be executed. Simple Soji screens were introduced into the spaces as well as the traditional mats found in many Japanese homes that help define the scale of the spaces. A heavy, rough-hewn wood fire place was introduced and contrasting lighter Japanese rice paper paintings were used as a contrast.
A new traditional Tea House was proposed for the small rear yard as a writing retreat for the husband and as a small crafts and music retreat for the wife, the entry to the house now marked by a small bridge over a Koi pond welcoming guest into the home.
